After each use the rifle was to be cleaned immediately. The barrel was removed from the stock and the bore was filled several times with clean warm water to soften the fouling. Then the barrel was half-filled again and the breech placed in water. A wooden cleaning rod wrapped with tow at the end was used to clean the residue of gunpowder until the tow remained clean. The water was then poured from the bore, and the barrel was then dried with tow. The dried barrel was oiled and replaced in the stock. The lock was to be cleaned and oiled as well, but without taking it apart completely. The stock was also cleaned, and frequently rubbed with a rag saturated with linseed oil to protect it from moisture (IKBPJCB: 15–17).
